BMW M5 E60 Adaptive Headlamp Malfunction: The Missing Rod (V10 M5)

My BMW M5 E60 threw the dreaded “Adaptive headlamp control malfunction” warning. Instead of guessing, I got under the car, and found that the headlight levelling arm, the small regulating rod on the level sensor, was simply gone. A new rod, clipped on by hand, codes cleared, warning gone… and then it came back. This video is the full story, and a good excuse to enjoy the S85 V10.

How the E60 adaptive headlights work

The bi-xenon projectors on the E60 M5 do two things on their own: they swing sideways into corners as you steer, and they level up and down with the car’s ride height. To know the ride height, the light module reads two small level sensors on the suspension, front and rear. Each sensor is driven by a short regulating rod. If a rod breaks or falls off, the sensor stops reporting sensible values, the module drops the lights to their lowest safe position and lights up the warning.

The fix: a missing regulating rod

On my car the rod on the sensor was missing completely. The replacement is a cheap aftermarket steel rod, threaded and adjustable, which is sturdier than the plastic original. It clips onto the sensor arm and the control arm by hand; set the sensor arm in mid-travel, clear the fault memory, switch the ignition on and watch the headlights self-level.

Part used: BMW Connector Rod for Headlight Level Sensor (Regulating Rod) – 37146766778 (BMW 37-14-6-766-778), aftermarket.

…and then the warning came back

The warning cleared and the lights worked, for a while. A few drives later the same message was back, so the missing rod was a real problem, but not the whole story. Next suspects: the sensor itself, the wiring to it, or the light module. Part 2 is coming.

Tip: if your BMW shows this warning, check both levelling rods first, front and rear. It’s a two-minute look, it’s often the whole fix, and even when it isn’t, it’s a part you needed anyway.
